The Media is Trying to Convince You the Economy is Good
You’re not crazy, the economy does suck.
I’m putting this one behind the paywall. Call it a mental health tax — my thoughts are less prim this week and I don’t need any comments keeping me up at night. If you want to call me an ignoramus in the comment section, you’ll have to pay a little extra for the privilege. :)
For the past few months, I have noticed that there has been a steady stream of propaganda from our mainstream media friends who are increasingly questioning the average American’s intelligence. In a nutshell, many of them think you and I are silly for having a vague idea that the economy is not that great.
NYC-based Morning Brew says “You’d need to be an Olympic long jumper to bridge the gap between how well the public thinks the economy is doing and how well the economy is actually doing.” They state that 72% of people surveyed by The Guardian think that inflation is going up, when in fact it’s more than halved from its peak in 2022 of 9.1%.
But is the current 3-4% inflation rate — after 9.1%, no less — really anything to be thrilled about? It’s still going up after all, and prices have exploded to match. These publications seem to think that the skyrocketing inflation since 2020, due in part to the US government adding trillions to our money supply during COVID, is over and we should get back to our lives. It is not that simple.
